Getting Started with JASP

JASP.png

To install, download JASP from jasp-stats.org. Install for your operating system (Windows, Mac, or Linux). Then launch JASP.

Once you have successfully installed JASP, you can load data by clicking the hamburger menu button at the top left corner, and selecting Open → Computer. Browse and find your data file (.csv file). Once you load the data, JASP automatically detects variable types (you can change them by clicking the variable icon).

Exercise 1: Dashboard Usability

Let’s use a hypothetical scenario and a synthetic dataset to practice how to use JASP. The scenario goes like this:

Imagine that you have been interning at a local tech company. You and your team have designed a dashboard that helps the company's employees access internal data. One day, your internship mentor approached you and raised a concern that some employees in the company are struggling to use the dashboard and having a hard time accessing the data efficiently. She asked if the dashboard needed a redesign.

You believed the redesign was unnecessary and instead suggested that employees watch a short video tutorial on how to use the dashboard effectively. To test this idea, you proposed the following experiment.

You proposed recruiting 30 employees who are having difficulty using the dashboard. You planned to examine if these employees become more efficient in finding the correct information in the dashboard after watching a video tutorial. You decided to measure how long it takes for each participant to find the right information on the dashboard in seconds. The study would have two parts. First, you'd ask the participants to perform a task in which they have to find some information on the dashboard. Then the same participants would watch a short video tutorial on how to use the dashboard and perform another task on finding some information on the dashboard.

You conducted the study and collected the following data (scenario1.csv):

scenario1.csv

The data has three columns:

Now, based on this scenario and using the given data, work on the following problems:

Summary Statistics

Load the data from scenario1.csv. Select Descriptives from the top menu. Move before and after to the Variables box in the window. Print out the summary statistics as shown on the right. State whether the mean task completion time has decreased, increased, or remained the same after the video tutorial.
